After a number of days of filling holes, evening out walls, taping, and priming, the painting has started in earnest. The fumes in the house are unbearable. I walked in the house on the first day of the painting and left within 10 minutes, but reeked of paint fumes for the next half hour!
They’re starting with the trim and doors, spraying on a satin coat of oil-based paint. The end result is an unbelievably smooth finish that looks like it’s paint on a metal surface. In fact, the trim work is done so neatly, it seems to meld right into the walls.
Our contractor is a serious stickler for paint. He walks through in different light conditions and uses a spotlight to look for ripples, flaws, and so forth. And the painters go over the areas again, and again. As a home owner trying to move in the house, I’m half tempted to say “good enough” but I know Chris is right and we’ll appreciate the results after we move in.
At this point, the upstairs trim work has been completed, ceilings have been painted, some walls upstairs, and the basement. Looking at the basement with finished down lights gives a nice effect. The ceilings are probably over 8′ after standing in the rest of the house, they seem somewhat low.
